Tour Diaries Exclusive — Rookie Sensation Jon Rahm
The Travelers Championship marks one of the last stops in the PGA TOUR season as players make their final push for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. One of those players making their end-of-season run is young phenom, Jon Rahm. Fresh off winning low amateur at the U.S. Open in June, Jon was in contention just days later at the Quicken Loans National, where he finished tied for 3rd.
He has yet to miss a cut since turning pro, and his solid play has been nothing short of stellar the last 2 months. He looks to continue his hot performance this week at TPC River Highlands where he can lock up his PGA TOUR card heading into the 2017 season.
Here's a quick recap of his play since turning professional:
—Quicken Loans National: T3 (64-67-70-70)
—Barracuda Championship: T72 (Modified Stableford Scoring +11)
—The Open Championship: T59 (74-71-73-75)
—RBC Canadian Open: T2 (67-71-72-67)
Take a look at the sticks in Jon's bag:
M2 Driver: 10.5° | Aldila Tour Green 75TX
M1 3 wood: 15° | Aldila Tour Green 75TX
M1 5 wood: 19° | Graphite Design Tour AD-DI 8X
Tour Preferred MB Irons: 3-PW | True Temper Project X 6.5
Tour Preferred EF Wedges: 52° 56° 60° | True Temper Project X 6.5
Jon was getting his bag dialed in at The Kingdom last week before heading out to Connecticut, and we handed over the reigns of our Twitter account to him for a Q&A session with his fans. Here are some insights into what it's like being a rookie on the PGA TOUR both on and off the course:
Q: What has been your favorite track on Tour thus far?
A: Oakmont. A challenging course that tests all parts of your game.
Q: Can you describe a normal practice day for you?
A: 140 characters won’t be enough, but I spend 75% of my time practicing inside 150 yards.
Q: What drills do you use for your short game and wedges?
A: I like to practice using my irons instead of my wedges, starting with 9 and moving down through the bag.
Q: Who is your ideal Ryder Cup partner?
A: I’d be thrilled to play with anybody, but Sergio Garcia would be my first choice!
Q: What would you recommend for a junior golfer who’s not as good as everyone else but wants to play on the PGA TOUR?
A: Never give up on your dreams. Hard work leads to great results.
Q: Tin Cup or Happy Gilmore?
A: Both are great, but I’m going to go with Tin Cup.
Q: What is your favorite club in your bag?
A: The M2 driver and my lob wedge.
Q: Rahmbo, it’s midnight, you’re hungry, and only the drive-through windows are open. What American fast food do you buy?
A: Jack in the Box. I love the tacos.
Jon fired a 5-under 65 in round one of The Travelers Championship and seems poised to be right in the hunt heading down the stretch Sunday afternoon.
With two top-three finishes to date, Jon has already gained 'Special Temporary Membership' on the PGA Tour, but we know that he is looking to accomplish much more than that. If history has anyway of repeating itself, we know that Jon's name will remain near the top of the leaderboard throughout the weekend as he looks to secure his first PGA Tour victory, lock up his card, and battle to take home Rookie of the Year in his maiden campaign.
