The RBC Heritage has the challenging honor of sitting behind the season’s first major, a calendar position it’s held for more than 50 years. And while the plaid jacket may not carry quite the same allure, year over year this time-honored tournament attracts a strong field as players make the short trip from Augusta to the shoreline of South Carolina. The famed Harbour Town Golf Links is under 7,100 yards, making it one of the shortest layouts on the PGA Tour. However, its demanding tee shots and undulating greens provide plenty of defense, with the course regularly ranking among the top-10 most difficult Tour stops. It ranked 8th hardest in the last full season (2019-20).
For 2021, in addition to World No. 1 Dustin Johnson, the Team TaylorMade athletes teeing it up this week include Collin Morikawa, Tommy Fleetwood, Robert MacIntyre, Doc Redman, Harry Higgs, Nick Taylor and Michael Gligic.
DJ’s bag remains the same as in Augusta (complete with the 21° SIM2 Max 7-wood he used to win his second major last fall), as does that of Morikawa and Higgs. However, there have been a number of updates for other players.
Tommy will likely change into a new putter this week, the prototype Bandon 1. This classically designed mallet is weighted on the heel and toe for added stability/forgiveness. The winged design aids with alignment, aim and balance. Consider this week a true test; if he putts well, this one may stay in the bag.
He’s going to a new TENSEI™ Pro White 1K shaft in his 9° SIM2 driver and a Diamana DF 70tx in a 13.5° SIM2 3wd. He’s also added a P•7TF Proto 3 iron to replace the 7-wood he carried the week prior. He continues to play the 2021 TP5x golf ball.
Coming off an impressive debut in Augusta, where he finished 12th, MacIntyre has added a SIM UDI 2-iron to the bag for this week. Given the tight fairways and precedence on accuracy at Harbour Town, this club makes a lot of sense for the young Scot. The rest of his bag will remain the same, including a 9° SIM2 driver, 15° SIM2 3-wood, P•7MC irons (4-PW) and two Milled Grind Hi-Toe wedges (52° and 58°).
After a week off, the former U.S. Amateur champion comes to Harbour Town ready to put the new 2021 TP5 golf ball in play. While he would have rather competed, the time allowed him to test the new ball extensively and get familiar with its added performance, which now includes the new Tour Flight Dimple Pattern and a larger, more responsive core.
Both Nick Taylor and Michael Gligic (pictured) have made additions to their bag. Taylor, who prolifically loyal to his equipment and rarely makes changes, has moved into a 9° SIM2 driver touting its added forgiveness. Gligic has made updates to his P•790 UDI 3-iron to better control the flight and trajectory in preparation for Harbour Town’s challenging tee shots.
