Team TaylorMade has one final tune up before the third major of the year next week at Pinehurst No. 2, and there probably isn’t a more difficult tune up golf course than Jack’s Place. Muirfiled Village is a demanding golf course that calls for strategic approaches off the tee and accurate approaches into greens with even thicker rough around the greens than past years.
We went inside the ropes with Team TaylorMade to get a look at how they will attack Muirfield Village ahead of The Memorial.
3-WOOD SZN FOR RORY
Rory McIlroy is coming off a Sunday 66 at the RBC Canadian Open to finish T4 heading into week two of a four week run of tournaments in June. Rory’s Qi10 3-wood will be huge off the tee this week as the course doesn’t call for drivers, especially when you can run it out to 330+ with driver like Rory can.
The advantage for Rory is that his 3-wood goes as far as a lot of his competitor’s drivers consistently carrying at 300-yards. In his back nine practice round on Tuesday, Rory went with the following clubs off the tee on Par 4s and 5s:
- 10th Hole: Qi10 9.0° driver
- 11th Hole: Qi10 9.0° driver
- 13th Hole: Qi10 15.0° 3-wood
- 14th Hole: P·760 4-iron
- 15th Hole: Qi10 9.0° driver
- 17th Hole: Qi10 15.0° 3-wood
- 18th Hole: Qi10 15.0° 3-wood
Hitting fairways was crucial in Rory’s practice round because it opened up the playbook to throw absolute darts at pins as you see from our Instagram post below.
- Qi10 9.0° driver (Ventus Black 6X)
- Qi10 15.0° 3-wood (Ventus Black 8X)
- Qi10 18.0° 5-wood (Ventus Black 9X)
- P·760 4-iron (Project X 7.0)
- Rors Proto Irons 5-9 (Project X 7.0)
- Milled Grind 4 46° SB, 50° SB, 54° SB (Project X 6.5)
- Spider Tour X Putter

Tommy only missed one fairway the entire round, with a mix of Qi10 Driver, BRNR Mini and Qi10 9-wood off the tee. Similar to Rory, there weren’t many drivers on the back nine for Tommy.

- 11th Hole: Qi10 9.0° driver
- 13th Hole: BRNR Mini Driver

- 15th Hole: Qi10 9.0° driver
- 17th Hole: BRNR Mini Driver
